The judge is out, the defense team is out, and a fair trial is out of the question. Saddam Hussein's current trial, verdict for the first one is expected in October, continues to be a farce. Most recently, Hussein was removed for being argumentative with a judge. His defense team's very unprofessional response was removing themselves from the courtroom as well. The trial continued without them, and although this is a trial for genocide, I believe rules of not being able to be tried in his absence may apply. Who knows, it is the Iraqi government who removed Judge Abdullah al-Amiri last week for stating Hussein was not a dictator .

Dictator or not, the only tangible arguments remaining for the U.S. invasion of Iraq are Hussein's crimes against humanity. The one truly tangible positive result from capturing Hussein is the fact he must face some form of judgment for his atrocious actions. And the international community is allowing him to make a mockery of his trial with hunger strikes (put him on an I.V., sedated - if necessary - until trial time). His back talk would not be tolerated in any other court. What defense team would walk out if not looking for a mistrial?

These proceedings are a joke. If the U.S., or any other country, want to see anything positive come out of the war in Iraq in the short-term, Hussein must be tried in a serious manner. If the U.S., or any other country, care about genocide, this man needs to be held accountable.

Putting Sadam on trial itself is strong enough of a symbol. The world can be changing fast for dictatorships. Think about who would have the guts to think of putting Sadam in a jail cell before the US invasion. Now, the Iraqis can watch his trial on TV. Yes, he is making a mockery of a system that needs to be fixed, but pretty soon, he won't be.

Well, Erin_C, I don't think the proceedings were a joke to the three attorneys for Saddam who got murdered, or to those getting death threats.

We can at least be thankful that the Iraqis are running this trial. The U.N. was conducting Slobodan Milosevic's trial, and it was taking years, and cost an estimated $200 million, mostly paid by "Uncle Sucker" to bloodsucking $1,000 an hour U.N. lawyers. It took so long, it killed the defendant. At least Slobodan saved untold millions. Was it justice? Doubtful. But maybe the Iraqis can do a better job.

You're right. I just hope that something good comes from all this. I hope that, in the midst of countless mistakes and miss-judgment, something of the original plan and enlightment of Democracy has shined through the world. I hope that liberty gets it's point through, although missrepresented, I hope it gets through.
