We get a little too full of ourselves when we claim that we puny humans are changing the climate so drastically. Remember why GREENLAND is so called? Because it was GREEN. The Vikings raised livestock there. That was centuries before we started burning all these so-called fossil fuels. And remember, it got cold again, and Greenland turned white. A single large volcanic eruption can inject magnitudes more "greenhouse gasses" into the atmosphere than all of Man's efforts. (And cows. Remember all the hot air expended a few years back on the problem of cattle flatulence? But was that about melting the ice caps, or wrecking the ozone? I can't recall.)

Is the planet getting warmer? It seems it is. I've flown over Greenland and the ice is melting.
Are we polluting the planet? We certainly are. Just step outside during rush hour.
Is that pollution causing problems? Without a doubt. Cough, cough.
Is our pollution--gasses, particulates, toxins--making the earth warmer? I doubt it. Consider Tambora, Vesuvius, Pinatubo.

So clean up your own act. And don't move to a coastal area. Unless you have a good lifeboat. And don't move close to a volcano. Unless you can run REALLY fast.

But hey. Greenland might be nice, without all that ice.

Just because there are other forces at work causing the warming of the planet doesn't mean that human pollution doesn't bear a share of the blame as well. This is not a problem which has any one cause. And to name the cause as being something which humans cannot hope to halt the progress of is just defeatism. If you assume that global warming is an inevitable fact which cannot be prevented, then you're justifying any damage that's done in the meantime.

Well first of all your an idiot who doesnt know history. Greenland is called greenland to entice people to settle. It was always just a floating glacier. Iceland was named to discourage invaders. the name of the two viking islands should really be reversed.

Regardless how hard Al Gore promotes his home-made amateur film, there is no solid evidence that human activity is causing the global warming. All we have seen are correlations between increasing human acitivies and warming of the atmosphere. But correlations are NOT causal relations. If a lightning strikes 5 seconds after you take a sneeze, can you say that your sneeze cause the lightning?

Human beings contribute to only 3-4% of CO2 in the atmoshpere and the rest comes from other sources, like volcanos. The global warming debate will have more credibility if politicians like Al Gore are not the spokepersons for one side of the argument.

Hmmm. Joel. Best not call me an idiot before you check your history and your geography. Your spelling? Well, I'll give you a pass on that one.

Geography. You got a real problem. GreenLAND is the largest isLAND in the world. It's terra firma--that's Latin for LAND--with lots of snow and ice. It's never been "a floating glacier." Glaciers form on LAND. The arctic pack ice is floating, though not a glacier. When glaciers break off and drop into the ocean--that's called calving--they become icebergs.

History. Indeed, Eric the Red did want to attract settlers, but it would take too long to carve "Land that is mostly white with ice and snow but has two areas in the southwest suitable for farming and raising cattle" into rune stones. And the cost to NorseEx the stones back to Iceland would have killed him. So he settled for the shortened version.

Eric was exiled from Iceland for manslaughter--anybody had the right to kill him for the crime--so he fled, and, being the gregarious party animal he was, wanted company. But do you think the people that accepted the invitation to Greenland would have let him live if he lied, and it was totally icebound? Eric was tough, but not that tough. Eric the Red would have been Eric the Bloody Red.

I am dubious of the self-flagellating Chicken Littles who always have to find something "we evil humans" have done to mess things up, and are slow to look for natural causes. Pinatubo's 1991 eruption injected an estimated cubic mile of particulates plus 20 million tons of sulfur dioxide into the atmosphere. The earth's average temps dropped for two years. In 1815, Tambora blew maybe 15 cubic miles of matter into the sky, not to mention the gases.1816 was known in North America and parts of Europe as "the year without a summer." In New England, people died in blizzards in June.

If you can figure how to stop a volcanic eruption, get a patent. You'll get rich.

I'm not saying that natural polutants like volcanoes aren't really causing their fair share of damage (or more than that). But you can't blame everything on them. It doesn't take a genius to reliaze that the kind of emissions produced by a car are having an effect on the environment. To say nothing of other man-made polutants. That's not the only problem - but it is a problem. We can't put a damper on volcanoes, but we can put a damper on automobile and industrial emissions. To not do that would be like getting stabbed in the hand and the arm and saying "I won't bandage the hand because I can't bandage the arm".

well, either way you're gonna bleed to death. but what about the over development of land? does our wildlife have as much right to their land as we do. apparantly not. neighborhoods everywhere, run trees, run. competition a plus for us, but what about them? animals will relocate or die, who cares? as long as we make money, right? but whatever, earth will swallow us all when she feels ready. remember, we rotate vertically too, just much slower.
